DOSWELL, VA – A CSX employee was killed after being struck by a train in Doswell, Virginia on Thursday, June 10, 2010. The victim has been identified as Marshall W. Conner, 54 years old, from Spring Grove, VA. The accident happened shortly after 10:00 a.m. while Connor was working in a rail yard alongside the tracks.

KEARNY, NJ — A New Jersey Transit worker died after he was struck by a wayward locomotive in a railroad maintenance yard in Kearny, New Jersey early Monday morning, June 1, 2010 around 3:30 a.m. The railroad worker who was killed was identified as 63-year-old NJ Transit worker, Greg Kastner.

NEW ALBANY, MS – A railroad worker was killed while equipment was being loaded with a backhoe in New Albany, Mississippi on June 2, 2010. The fatal train accident happened north of the Cleveland Street crossing while working on the Mississippi-Tennessee Railroad.

DETROIT, MI – A semi truck collided with a Norfolk Southern train in southwest Detroit, Michigan on May 14, 2010 at about 5:40 a.m. Four people were injured as a result of the incident. The train and semi truck accident occurred just west of Oakwood Heights in an industrial area of the city.

RIVERDALE, IL – The woman, who was killed Friday night on April 23, 2010 when a freight train rolled over her in a Riverdale rail yard, has been identified as Melinda Carter, 37, a CSX railroad employee. According to Melinda’s family, she was at work in the yard when a train malfunctioned and rolled over her.

Melinda Carter, a 37 year old CSX train conductor, was run over by a freight train that malfunctioned while she was working in a Riverdale rail yard.

The accident occurred on the company’s grounds near 134th Street and Ashland Avenue in Riverdale and an investigation is ongoing, a CSX spokesman said.  ... Read More

WATSONVILLE, CA – A train brake operator was injured when an 18 wheeler big-rig was torn in two Thursday afternoon on April 15, 2010 when it collided with a train on West Beach Street. The truck strew hundreds of gallon buckets filled with frozen strawberries across the road, blocking traffic for about five hours.

The truck driver was traveling eastbound on West Beach Street near Industrial Road around noon, Watsonville police officer Lee Katich said. The train was backing up on the north side of West Beach, heading south. The semi truck was traveling slower than the speed limit witnesses told officers, before it crashed into the train. ... ROCK ISLAND COUNTY, IL – Andrew Schulte, a former Iowa Interstate Railroad train employee, was awarded $33 million in damages by a Rock Island County jury last Thursday for a tragic accident that occurred in a Rock Island rail yard in April 2007.

According to the lawsuit, Schulte was trying to pull a pin on a rail car while walking alongside a train on a switching lead. The lawsuit states that the pin lifter stuck, causing Schulte to trip and fall, at which point he was struck and run over by a rail car.

WASHBURN, ND – The conductor of a train was killed after becoming trapped when two engines derailed and fell into the Turtle Creek about 3 miles south of Washburn, North Dakota. Washburn is located in central North Dakota about 40 miles north of Bismarck, 44 miles north of Mandan, 229 miles west of Fargo and 280 miles west of Grand Forks.

The engines derailed after an embankment gave way from under the train. There were two railroad workers involved in the train accident. One died at the scene and the other was taken to a hospital in Bismarck where he was treated for a laceration. The body of the deceased railroad worker was removed from the scene of the accident about 4:30 pm. The names and ages of the two railroad workers have not been released. No other railroad workers were reported to have been involved in the accident. ... Read More

PITTSBURGH, PA -  Two trains heading in opposite directions collided on Tuesday, Mar 16, about 4 a.m. near South Braddock Avenue and Main Street, where North Versailles, North Braddock and East Pittsburgh meet, causing a derailment that killed 54 year old Union Railroad freight train engineer, Andrew Monheim, of Plum PA. Authorities are uncertain why the collision happened.

North Versailles police Chief Vincent DiCenzo Jr. told reporters that Monheim died when he was ejected from a northbound train hauling empty rail cars that struck a southbound train transporting iron ore pellets headed for U.S. Steel’s Edgar Thomson plant. ... Read More

MADISON COUNTY, WI – On Wednesday, March 17, A lawsuit was filed by Stephen S. Kawa, a former Norfolk Southern Railroad employee, against Norfolk Southern Railroad. The lawsuit claims that Kawa began working as a laborer for Norfolk Southern Railroad in 1978 and finished his career in 2009. Over the course of his 31 year employment, the former railroad worker claims he was assigned duties beyond his physical capabilities and subjected to numerous repetitive traumas which resulted in his multiple injuries.

According to the complaint, Kawa also claims that on July 6, 2009, he sustained sustained permanent injuries to his neck, back and body after hitting his head on the roof of a truck.  ... Read More
