Liberty, SC – A Norfolk Southern train derailed in Liberty, SC on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at about 4:30 p.m. A toxic substance was spilled from a tanker in the mishap but the spill was contained by Hazmat teams. Twenty-four freight cars were involved in the derailment and were damaged as a result.
Liberty is in Pickens County, South Carolina in the northwestern part of the state, about 235 miles northwest of Charleston, about 20 miles southwest of Greenville, about 111 miles southwest of Rock Hill, about 239 miles northwest of Mount Pleasant, about 49 miles southwest of Spartanburg, about 126 miles northwest of Columbia, about 270 miles norhtwest of Myrtle Beach and about 214 miles northwest of Summerville.

CLEVELAND, NC – A tractor-trailer collided with a Norfolk Southern train in Cleveland, North Carolina on June 7, 2010. The truck driver was injured but at this time there are no reports if any railroad workers sustained injuries as a result of this incident. The accident occurred in front of Shaver Wood Products in Rowan County at about 10:30 in the morning near Statesville Boulevard (U.S. 70). Shaver Wood Products is located at the Rowan-Iredell county line just off U.S. 70.

CHATTANOOGA, TN – The Federal Railroad Administration is investigating the May 23 CSX train derailment in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which happened at about 4:30 p.m. near the 3200 block of Broad Street. Officials may also be looking at the steadily rising number of accidents in the area.
The CSX derailment was at least the third this year in Chattanooga. FLEETWOOD, PA – A 19 year old Fleetwood resident was struck and killed at a railway crossing in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania by a Norfolk Southern train on May 25, 2010.

DETROIT, MI – A semi truck collided with a Norfolk Southern train in southwest Detroit, Michigan on May 14, 2010 at about 5:40 a.m. Four people were injured as a result of the incident. The train and semi truck accident occurred just west of Oakwood Heights in an industrial area of the city.

Melbern, Ohio – On April 19, 2010 a Norfolk Southern freight train of about 37 cars derailed Monday morning at 9:22 a.m. in Melbern, Ohio. Melbern is just east of Edgerton and about four miles west of Bryan, Ohio.

WATERLOO, IN – On Friday evening, March 26, 2010, a train on the way to Michigan derailed in Waterloo, Indiana and spilled 5500 tons of coal. Waterloo is located in the north eastern part of the state about 152 miles north east of Indianapolis and about 25 miles north of Fort Wayne.
Thirty eight Norfolk Southern cars derailed in the mishap. According to a company spokesman, the train was headed from Chicago, IL to Monroe, MI. Although there is no official word on the cause of the accident, the Waterloo town board president said that the cause may have been due to a broken axle on one of the train cars. MADISON COUNTY, WI – On Wednesday, March 17, A lawsuit was filed by Stephen S. Kawa, a former Norfolk Southern Railroad employee, against Norfolk Southern Railroad. The lawsuit claims that Kawa began working as a laborer for Norfolk Southern Railroad in 1978 and finished his career in 2009. Over the course of his 31 year employment, the former railroad worker claims he was assigned duties beyond his physical capabilities and subjected to numerous repetitive traumas which resulted in his multiple injuries.
According to the complaint, Kawa also claims that on July 6, 2009, he sustained sustained permanent injuries to his neck, back and body after hitting his head on the roof of a truck. ... Read More
