UPS Semi Truck Crashes Into CSX Train Near Louisa, KY

LOUISA, KY – A UPS truck trailer was demolished in a collision with a CSX train in Louisa, KY on April 11, 2011 spilling its contents all over the road.

Louisa is located in Lawrence County, Kentucky in the northeastern part of the state bordering on West Virginia. Louisa is about 146 miles east of Lexington, KY.

The accident occurred just after 10:00 a.m. at the railroad crossing in front of the AEP Big Sandy Power Plant on U.S. Highway 23 about 6.6 miles north of downtown Louisa.

The UPS truck was a tractor-trailer. The collision occurred when it pulled out of the AEP Power Plant and crossed in front of the oncoming train. The UPS driver apparently did not hear the train’s whistle blow when it crossed the tracks.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident. Neither the truck driver or any railroad workers were injured as a result of the mishap. Also, there were no hazardous materials involved in the accident so no evacuations were ordered from the area.

An article in the LevisaLazer.Com website reports:

US 23 was closed for a very short period of time by the fire department and then reopened as soon as the scene was confirmed safe for traffic to pass.There were no injuries due to the accident, however the truck’s trailer was cut in half, caused minor damage to the train’s engine, broke a utility pole and damaged a small building.

The truck, carrying household bleach, some cleaners and various other products lost its entire load on and down the side of the railroad tracks.

Officials from The Sheriff’s Department, Emergency Management and the Louisa Fire Department were called to the scene of the accident.

There was some damage to the truck’s tractor, but the container trailer was completely obliterated. The accident basically cut the semi truck in two.

The cause of the accident is not known at this time and there are no official reports available.
