RUFFIN, NC – A Norfolk Southern train derailed on Tuesday October 1, in Ruffin, NC blocking the road with one rail car and sending another into a residential back yard.

The derailment happened around 9:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, October 1, when a Norfolk Southern train on its way to Allentown, PA jumped the tracks in Ruffin. The 95 car train was heading north from Linwood, NC when 3 rail cars left the tracks.

Two of the derailed cars were empty tankers and the other contained paper.

No injuries were reported and no railroad workers were hurt in the mishap.

There was no hazardous materials involved and no evacuations were ordered.

The city of Ruffin is located in Rockingham County, N.C. in the northern part of the state about 31.8 miles northeast of Greensboro.

The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation.
