GREENWICH TOWNSHIP, NJ – An empty tanker car derailed in Greenwich Township raising concerns of hazardous chemicals for local residents. Greenwich Township is in Gloucester County in the southern part of the state about 50 miles southwest of Trenton.

Although the rail car was empty at the time, no hazardous chemicals spilled and there was no need for concern. Nevertheless, local residents were on edge because less than a year ago, a hazardous spill did occur in the same area.

The mishap occurred around 10:30 in the morning when a tanker car jumped the tracks while heading into the PBF Energy facility near Billingsport Rd in Greenwich Township.

There were no injuries to any railroad employees and no evacuations were ordered.

The derailed car was re-railed later in the afternoon after the arrival of some heavy equipment to do the job.

The cause of the incident is not known at this time, but is currently under investigation.
