The accident occurred on March 23, when 25 of Union Pacific’s 56 rail cars derailed.  A spokesperson for the White County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that cars from a moving train hit a standing locomotive on the tracks near Highway 367 and Doyle Road just before 2pm. The train was hauling mostly auto parts and was traveling from from Laredo, Texas, to Salem, Illinois.

Reports said that an engineer was hurt after one of the cars crashed into a lead engine of a parked locomotive. Espinoza said that the engineer was released from a hospital two days after the accident.

Espinoza said that investigators discovered the broken rail after the derailment and immediately replaced it.
