EMPORIA, KS – The death of a pedestrian that occurred early Wednesday, Aug 17, on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks, may have been the result a drag racing incident outside of Emporia, according to KVOE News.

Lyon County Sheriff Jeff Cope says a deputy spotted two vehicles traveling 85 milers per hour shortly after midnight in the 1000 block of E. Logan, near Menu Foods. A pursuit followed and the deputy found the two vehicles in a ditch in the 1300 block of Road 160.

Authorities arrested 18-year-old Dylan Mangus for reckless driving and marijuana possession. The other vehicle was found empty, but around 12:40a.m., it was reported that a train traveling east hit a person about a half-mile north of the original crash sight. The man was dead when authorities arrived at the scene. Authorities are not releasing the victim’s name at this time.

The incident remains under investigation at this time according to authorities in Lyon County.
