FULTS, Il. – A Union Pacific train carrying carrying coal from out of state derailed on Sunday, July 24, at about 12:45 p.m near the southwestern Illinois town of Fults.
The accident damaged two stretches of track and a bridge, but officials said railroad workers should have the track repaired by late Monday. Fults Illinois is about 40 miles southeast of St. Louis, MO.
Mark Davis, a Union Pacific official, said that no injuries were reported at the time of the incident, but he did not have an explanation at the time as to what caused the accident.
The train which was headed from Wyoming to Joppa, Ill had three locomotives and 136 rail cars of which a dozen or more carrying coal derailed. Davis could not immediately say how much coal spilled during the derailment, but tons of coal are now dumped along the tracks where the derailment occurred.
It’s not yet known what might have caused the derailment which is believed to be on the Union-Pacific rail route.
The incident remains under investigation at this time.
