LITHIA SPRINGS, Ga – A westbound Norfolk Southern train with three locomotives and 41 rail cars of mixed freight traveling through Georgia to Birmingham, struck and killed a 35-year-old Powder Springs man lying on the tracks.

The incident occurred on Friday, July 8, at around 5:30 a.m. on the Norfolk Southern rail line near the Harper Road crossing, between U.S. Highway 78 and Ben Hill Road in Lithia Springs.

The victim was identified as Robert Willkens by Douglas County Coroner Randy Daniel who said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“His body was transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta for an autopsy, to determine why he was lying on the tracks,” Daniel said.

A Norfolk Southern police officer told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Friday morning that the man was lying on the tracks when the train approached. The officer said by the time the train engineer saw the man on the tracks, it was too late to stop.
