HITCHCOCK, TX – A BNSF train was traveling southbound on Friday, July 1, around 1:30 a.m on the rail line when the derailment occurred.
The rail line is parallel to State Highway 6 where nine train cars derailed from railroad tracks in downtown Hitchcock delaying traffic.
FOX 26 News reports:
No one was injured in the derailment and two of the derailed cars which contained hazardous materials did not tumble over and leak, confirmed Chief Clay Kennelly with the Hitchcock Police Department.
Chief Kennelly also said one of the train cars crashed into an old lumber storage facility.
Chief Kennelly said he expected crews to spend most of Friday uprighting the derailed cars and removing them from the accident site.
Click2Houston reports:
Two tank cars carrying hazardous materials also jumped the tracks, but they remained upright and were not compromised, investigators said.
A quarter-mile of track needs to be replaced, investigators said.
“They have to replace 52 of those panels to get the main line back open,” Hitchcock Police Chief Clay Kennely said.
Police said they expect the cleanup to take hours.
Officials urged residents to use F.M. 2004 or Mike Street to cross the tracks.
The train was traveling from Seadrift, Texas, to the BNSF yards in Galveston.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
