SALT LAKE CITY, UT – A Union Pacific freight train derailed in Salt Lake City, UT on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 about 5:45 a.m. in the morning.
Salt Lake City is in Salt Lake County, Utah in the northern part of the state, about 36 miles south of Ogden.
Details are sketchy at the moment but it appears that the train was hauling cement. It is not known how many cars were in the train, how many jumped the tracks, where the train was heading from or what its destination was.
The derailment occurred downtown near the intersection of 800 South and 600 West. Union Pacific crews were dispatched to the scene of the mishap and quickly got to work. The tracks were cleared by about 8:00 a.m.
Fortunately, there were no injuries reported and no railroad workers were injured in the incident. Also, there were no hazardous materials involved and no evacuations were ordered in the area.
According to reports, none of the derailed cars overturned.
The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation.
