PIKETON, OH – A man was killed when the pickup truck he was driving collided with a southbound Norfolk Southern train in Piketon Ohio on September 22, 2010 at about 5:15 p.m. in the afternoon.
Piketon is in Pike County, Ohio in the southern part of the state about 71 miles south of Columbus, about 94 miles southeast of Cincinnati and 104 miles southeast of Dayton.
The accident occurred at a railway crossing between Wakefield Mound Road and U.S. 23 about 7 miles south of Piketon.
The victim was identified as 56 year-old Piketon resident, Terry Brumfield. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident occurred as Brumfield was trying to cross the tracks while leaving his driveway on Wakefield Mound Road in Piketon.
A passenger in the pickup truck was also injured in the accident. The passenger was identified as 30 year-old Charles P. Brumfield, from McDermott, Ohio. He was airlifted by helicopter to a hospital in Huntington with head injuries. No other details on his condition are available.
According to State Troopers, there was a second passenger in the back seat of the pickup truck. The second passenger, whose identity and condition is not known, fled the scene and had not been located as of Thursday morning the next day.
According to reports, there were no injuries on the train.
The crash is being investigated.
